Jul. 27—Firefighters Thursday extinguished a blaze at a warehouse in southwest Houston that briefly sent thick, black plumes of smoke billowing into the air, visible for miles.
One firefighter suffered a back injury during the attack on the blaze in the 2900 block of Holmes Road, but no one else was injured, according to the Houston Fire Department.
It wasn't immediately clear what caught fire at the recycling center but aerial images from Click2Houston appeared to show both vehicles and a building engulfed in flames. Additionally, Houston police told the outlet a portion of the scrap yard caught fire after some type of explosion.
Despite the thick, black smoke, which is typical when manmade materials such as tires and vehicles are burning, officials said they had not issued a shelter-in-place order. The fire had been extinguished as of around 1 p.m.
